I am so sorry for abandoning you all :(
I am back, though, and try to update this blog every now and then again. Let's start of with a pair of socks, they are so me.

Curry and turmeric (Ravelry)

I started these last Thursday, when our knitting group held an extra meeting to honour a guest, Glittrgirl, from the UK. I love Casbah so much, it is so smooth, round and properly twisted. I also love the colour with all its carrot-y shades and energetic teals.

Dad will be getting these for Christmas.

Greetings from the woods

We spent the weekend at my parents’ summer place and hopefully future residence .It was so relaxing I can’t even begin to describe it. The weather was HOT, the sun was shining and all you could hear was birds tweeting, mosquitos buzzing and occationally the coffee machine.

In the picture above is the outhouse, of course. It was the first building my father built there when they bought the lot.

The rhubarb was about to bloom. I sliced some rhubarb to bring home with me – I plan on making a pie next week.

The closest lake is about two miles from our place, but we went there to feel the breeze (we hoped) and rest our eyes on the shimmering water.

The main building is slowly getting ready. My dad builds it pretty much on his own, on the weekends and holidays. By the four of us we could finally carry the wood-burning stove inside from the trailer. It weighed something around 200 kilograms, at least that is what my dad said. Here it is, in their future kitchen, with its new friend and neighbor, the electric stove.

My dad also drained the well so he can wash it – I didn’t realize that needs to be done every year! I was asleep on the garden swing while he was working hard with the well.

The permanent water pump will be assembled this fall and then they will get running water too. Next weekend an elecrician will be there to continue his work and they hope to gat the electric stove working.

Next summer the balcony will probably get built and we will finish painting the front of the house.

I did not knit one row whil there. It was a vacation from that, too. Instead I drank some sparkling wine, burnt my scalp, read comic books, played with my mum’s cat, slept well and loved my life.

My first adult-sized blanket is ready and I am thrilled!

It took 1200 grams of worsted-weight cotton and around 70 hours of my time and I love it.

Also note that the birch tree in the background has full-sized leaves. Summer! Lori, now the lilacs are blooming here :)

Paper buttons?

Did you know you can use recycled paper to finish off your nxt cardi or bag? Check out these fantastic paper buttons from Etsy. Not only are they ecological and innovative, they’re damn fine-looking!

Another advertisement – not paid, though :) – if you carry any knitting or crocheting around, you’ll definitely want to check out Zigzagstitches on Etsy. I’ve bought maybe five of these boxy bags for myself (and my boyfriend, as they arre great for cosmetic bags etc. too!) and one for a Secret Pal gift.

Broomstick!

My (hopefully) future mother-in-law taught me to broomstick crocheting a couple of years back. I have used it to make a large triangle scarf for my mum, but that’s it.

I happened to have a ball of bamboo silk sock yarn, hand-dyed by Handu, and knitting socks out of it didn’t inspire me one bit. Oh well, I thought, mum will surely appreciate another scarf for her birthday late this month…

I am using a 5 mm hook and one knitting needle, size 20 mm. 40 stitches across. It is very airy and somehow subtle, like cherry flowers or something.

Blogging is weird – in a good way! Suddenly I find myself having a friend in France.
I want to pass this on to Amimonogatari and Marjut. Both ladies have ways of inspiring me and I also have the pleasure of eating cake with them once a month :)

Here’s something I am making for our little home. I messed up with the crocheting terms as I didin’t realize they are different in the UK from the ones used in the US. But no worries, it still is sort of a square-ish and will be perfect little blanket for our sofa anyway.

On Saturday we went for a little hike in the forest and also walked to the shore for some more bird pics. These are by my boyfriend.

I may not be a bird per se but he took a few pictures of me too :)

Seagulls and acid socks

I had a great time yesterday as I walked down to the shore to photograph seagulls.

The sky was incredibly blue, sun was shining and the birds were already waiting for me.

Ok, I admit, I gave them food. Many people hate seagulls, but to me they are a deear sign of home and summer.

Clown barf socks

Ugh. I am taking part in a Finnish charity campaign. We knit socks for people in the margins of society, mainly for the homeless. The socks are distributed through a very well-known organization, which for ages was a one-man struggle against poverty and prejudices. Now the founder’s son has taken over the work after his father died. They serve food and shelter and socks will be very welcome.

I’ve knit two pairs now and will try to make a couple of more pairs. I know the clown barf socks are ugly as hell but I hope the colors will be appreciated by someone whose world lacks colors as it is.

To me these socks are turmeric and curry, flowing rivers of Indian spices. I love the color!.

I also love the pattern. I used the first (free) version of the pattern and just now noticed the new (nearly free) version being available. I managed fine with the free one, but if you feel intimitated by turning heels and so on, maybe you want to spend four dollars on more detailed version of the pattern.

I love the subtle changes in teh yellow. Notice how different the sole looks from the twisted upper side of the foot.

I only knit two repetitions of the chart for the leg as I was worried I’d run out of yarn.

I still have plenty of yarn, of course.

I wonder who on my gift list would be worth a pair of golden socks…

No, really, I need to think about foot circumpherence as these really won’t stretch at all. Maybe my sister will be the one to get these.

Sneaky rivers

I received a ball of BC Garn’s sock yarn in the last shipment of a Finnish yarn club last fall. 50 grams is not that much, so I chose to use the yarn for sneakers.

I can’t claim they are pretty, but they sure are unique and energetic :)

I did not like the yarn. There was a plastic-y feel to it. I was sure glad to see it pooled, it made the knitting way more fun.

These took ages to finish. I started out with one yarn but ran out. I rather like the turqoise trims even though I never would have thought of them had I not ran out of my first yarn :)

I finished a pair of fingerless mitts for myself – it will be quite cold here for a couple of months still and I want to take pictures outside. Thus new photographing mitts.

The colour sort of reminds me of orchids or some other exotic flowers. Stunning turquoises and vivid rainforest greens plus the strong pink blooming throughout the canopy. Jenna, once again – fantastic job!

I practiced a bit with the camera’s remote, but as you see, the results are a bit funny. Maybe you’ll be able to focus on the gloves even though the pictures always don’t…

I am very happy with these.

And then the hint I mentioned in the title. I am one pathetic addict and my drug is Etsy, so that’s what this is all about.

As I’ve said: Buy handmade when you can (and support the economy too). Buy recycled. Buy from ethical producers. I stumbled upon one seller who meets all these ’requirements’: The June Bride. She sells many things from vintage buttons to fabulous animal-eared baby hats. My favorites are her felted flower brooches made from old sweaters. Not only that she buys much of her materials from charity shops, she also donates 100 % of the profits to charities. Check out her profile for more info.

The tits are singing

Great tits are the first sign of the spring. I kid you not.

The temperature is back on the positive scale and it has been raining. The tits scream all over and it isn't dark when I get off work.

I would be feeling amazing if I weren't down with a flu again. I am not feeling all that productive craftwise and I hate the state of our home - I need someone to come and clean this place up!

As I've been too tired to work on my assymmetrical cardi, I've been browsing through some knitting books again and planning waaaay ahead. Also I have grabbed one of my three crochet hooks and crocheted a dish cloth. So whenever you feel like coming to clean my flat, you'll have a brand-new cloth to work with!

The Fleece Artist merino seems to be a fine choice for the La Digitessas - I am not sure if I have enough yarn, though. Oh well, keeps things interesting on the second sock, too.

My own mittens are progressing slowly. I love how the colours of the KnitPicks Harmonies blend in with this Indie Dyer colorway. Especially the greens are very similar.

We got a new camera. I am so happy!

It arrived within 12 hours after I finished these fingerless gloves for my man.

The yarn was just enough, I had less than 2 grams left when I was finished.

I modified the pattern a great deal and finally added the hoods for the fingers. Knitting was surprisingly difficult - I had to rip a lot as I am too lazy to make him try them on every 5 minutes.

The end result is fitting and very personal, thanks to the fantastic yarn. Thanks for dying a great colorway, Jenna!

Saami and spring

Whoah, the sun is shining and we have +0.9 degrees celsius. Definitely very spring-y weather. Energizing.

Soon it'll be warm enough to be outside with these. My goal was to achieve something that resembles wood bark and I feel I did. Way cool! I made them for my man but he couldnät see himself using pulse warmers and I got to keep them myself :D Double yippee!

Also for myself - the Saami accessories:

The yarn is Wollmeise superwash sockyarn in Saami. 150 grams was sufficient for all these and I was left with two metres or so. All of the patterns are pretty much improvized, but I wrote down some notes about the sneakers on their Ravelry project page.

Heels of fire

I definitely love Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock. I've knit two pairs of socks with it and it is so soft. Also - the colors are really vibrant. Can you say you disagree?

That's me standing on our kitchen table, which, by the way, was made by my grandfather before my dad was born. The table and the benches were up for grabs when my Granny moved to an old folks' house. I was prepared for some competition but no-one else wanted them. Weird.

The table could do with a new paint job, but I need to find the same greyish white for it. It was painted with that color before I was born and I've had my share of Granny coffee and peach cobbler looking at that color. I can't part with it.

Maelstroms and a change in weather

While I was sipping chili cocoa with other knitters a white blanket dropped on the ground.

It's not cold anymore and the snow is already melting. Helsinki winters... Two days of low temperature, one day of snow.

I finished a pair of Maelstroms. I received the pattern and yarn from my Finnish Secret Pal in the autumn and the actual socks are traveling to my (hopefully) future mother-in-law.

It was really cold this morning, - 18 degrees Celsius. Still one could easily see that the spring is coming - I was on my way to work at 9.25 am and actually saw the sun! Well, only at the horizon, but still, I was outside at the same time as the sun! I usually only see it through the office window.

I had the most wonderful Christmas. Yes, I celebrate Christmas even though I am not Christian, and don't feel bad about it. As I've said, every reason to love and cherish each other is worth a celebration, and even though Jesus is not divine for me, I sincerely appreciate his teachings.

I managed to avoid all stress and rushing this Christmas. The gifts were ready in time - well, except for my father's socks, which I steamed on Christmas eve right before we left for my parent's. We had time for everyone, my older Granny was pretty much herself and happy, my younger Granny wasn't mean and no-one was drunk. Woo-hoo!

Everyone who got hand-knits from me seemed to really appreciate them. I gave five pairs of socks, six hats and two child-size cardigans. I must admit I was a bit surprised myself - I have never been able to stay focused on and excited about anything this long. *pat pat* Go me!

Only one picture today, and not knit by me either. My hopefully future mother-in-law knit me these for Christmas. I didn't knit anything for her and I felt bad, so I cast on a pair of Maelstroms a couple of days ago. She deserves socks knit by someone else. Everyone does.

Wollmeise!

I still haven't knit anything from my Wollmeise yarn. I am too stingy - having seen their price on eBay and such I just can't open the packages. It's not like I plan to sell them or anything, no, but I need to have a SUPER plan before I cast on with Wollmeise :)

Here they are. You have been warned.

This is where they dwell. In a large glass bowl on top of a dining room cupboard. Five skeins is all the bowl can hold, so before the next package I need to knit some of them.

On the left is a skein of La Digitessa, the others are from the sock club. The December package contained the third skein ("Saami") and the fourth skein ("Jultomte")

The theme was childhood memories. These memories have to do with Christmas and of Lapland - the native people in the Lapland of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia are the Sami people, hence the name Saami. As a Finn this made me very happy.

We also got small cookie cutters, some candy and a yarn sample. I was absolutely thrilled.

Not all the members seem to be in love with Saami as it is rather striking, but I love it.

Santa's little helper

Santa was starting to act all anxious already and said I'll run out of time with 14 WIPs. Something about thinking too much of oneself and being overly ambitious? Go figure...

My nephew's sweater is done. I found these 50 % cotton / 50 % acrylic balls for 1€ per piece and the yarn is perfect for children's clothing. Easy to wash, dries quickly and is not so expensive you want to cry when the sweater is suddenly too small after two weeks of use.

I am not all that satisfied, I should have used smaller needles.

Sorry for being so quiet for a long, long time. Blogging in more languages than one has proved to be rather exhausting at times. Still I decided to keep my blogs separate.

Today I want to talk about buttons. Many of us are in constant search of great buttons for different projects. I find it hard to find perfect buttons for cardis. Wooden buttons are also hard to find if you want anything special.

Etsy seems to be an answer to this, too. As always. My answer to everything (except "where to find perfect wrinkle-free office blouses") seems to be Etsy nowadays. I love all things hand-made. I love entrepreneurism in people, I love creative spirit, I love non-industrialized production (I made up most of the word in this sentence and can't be bothered to look them up - I hope my point gets across anyway). So I buy on Etsy.

One of my favorite button shops in Etsy is definitely Heatherknitz. The dinosaur buttons above are from her, as are many others in my stash. Absolutely adorable fabric covered buttons in many sizes + super friendly service. I can recommend her shop from all my heart.

Etsy buttons are not just for kids or kiddie clothing, though. Take a look at these ginkgo leaf beauties I got from Eclectic Oddities:

They are absolutely stunning - scrabble tiles, fabric, rhinestones and some sort of glass-like varnish. Super special!

Magic's buttons I've used in two garments already. She works with polymer, so the buttons have a funky feel to them. They look rather like metal due to the finishing, but the feel is more like flexible plastic.

Beautiful washable buttons can be also found in Buttons by Robin. I ordered a bunch of raccoons, skunks and owls from her and they are brilliant. I haven't taken any pictures of them yet, but do go check the shop out. You'll like them!

You might wanna go grab a cup of coffee - I am not nearly done yet :)

SewingRabbit has provided me with these super cute kittie buttons. This hat is for my mom. I've also bought a bunch of piggies from her and they are ever so sweet :)

Greenjelly I have tried also. These buttons are from her. I think it is fairly safe to say fabric buttons are not just for kids - they spice up accessories for adults too. I know my sister will love her new matryoshka hat.

If you are part of the first-ever Wollmeise Sock Club and have not seen the first package yet, go away NOW. There are some pictures involved here. :)

I knew that the package had arrived while we were enjoying our annual trip to Krakow. Because it didn't arrive before the trip, I checked the spoiler thread from Ravelry before I left for the airport. I just knew I couldn't take eight more days of suspension.

When we came back, I was not able to go to sleep and get the parcel the next day as I had planned. Instead I put my clothes back on and ran out the door to get it from the post office - and boy, it was worth it!

The theme was home land and Claudia's home land is Bavaria in Germany. The wonderful, deep colours of the yarn represented Bavaria- Elderberry bush and box wreath. Attached were a wonderful sock pattern, fabulous DPNs and a piece of chocolate.

My problem is this: I can't bring myself to unwrap the yarn from it's plastic shelter. I have three skeins of Wollmeise sock yarn now and I have never actually touched the stuff. Eh?

Baby Cables

I love the Baby Cables and Big Ones Too pattern! I've knit it for five balls of yarn now and loved almost every minute.

I also got the yarn for the Green Gables hoodie. I LOVE the autumn. Hate the weather, hate the fact that the winter is coming... but love the bulky yarns, woolly socks, scarves and mittens.

After having spent a couple of months in Ravelry I start to learn things about myself. In what order do I do things there, what do I prioritize if I'm busy (never too busy to go there at all :)) an so on.

What I find totally intriguing is how much people use the Friend Activity tab. Have you noticed, how fast a thing you mark as a favorite is favorited by half of your friends?

I am making a Jacques Cousteau hat (scroll down for the English pattern) in brown for my lovely boyfriend, who ordered pizza yesterday when I was napping. Perfect! Pictures later

The smallest garment and other stuff

Iih, I've got some new yarn!

This is what I got from the Secret Wool sock club (It's a Finnish yarn store, so I won't link it here). It is Indie Dyer yarn! If you don't know Indie Dyer, she is Jenna, the daughter of the Cherry Tree Hill yarns' Cheryl. The yarn I got is basically the same as CTH Supersock Merino, but of course dyed by Jenna. And I love CHT yarns!

I finished a cloth I'll take to the shower with me. It is linen stitch, a new pal of mine. Looks nice, on both sides. Basic cotton, crocheted edges.

And what's this? The yarn is super cheap but ok Finnish 50/50% blend of cotton and acryl. But... it doesn't look like anything...

Ok, now I get it - it's a baby hoodie for my cousin's baby, who is due in March. I think I'll have to make it a bit longer, though. I have no idea how big babies are and I am aiming for a size that fits a baby 2 to 3 months old.

Positivity - finally

Usually I am not a big fan on Hydrangeas. This one I like - it blooms now, when the trees are about to turn yellow and almost every other flowering plant is nursing its seeds already.

After quitting the Ravelympics I was a bit scared I had broken something in my motivation. But already it is coming back. I told myself to take it easy and knit 'a dish cloth or something' - so I did!

And here's the phone cozy. It is missing a button to hold the crocheted strap in place, but almost done! :)

And to New Yorkers, no, the light is not New Jersey.

I feel soooo much better after giving up the olympics! I've knit the phone cozy and am working on a dish cloth. Very simple, very therapeutic. No goals, no dead lines, nothing. Just me, the yarn and the beautiful ebony circulars.

My perfectly lovely Finnish Secret Pal sent her first package. I was, and still am, thrilled! Now I don't have to buy neither yarn nor beads for the Da Vinci Mystery Shawl KAL in october. Quite a sherlock, she is. And the color is very beautiful, rich and vivid.

Needless to say, but the chocolate was also very welcome :D

...but not a loser!
I want to quit. I quit.
I feel such hate. I hate everything. Mittens, yarn, needles (even my favorite ones!) - the whole craft. I am almost half-way there, but I won't go on.

Life is too short for knitting something you hate. Four pairs of similar mittens witout being inspired? Within two weeks? Yeah, you just go ahead if it sounds good to you. I won't. I'll rather cast on something that makes my heart beat with joy.

I will finish the pairs I have worked on, but not now. I'll put them aside to wait for me to like them again.

Blahblahblah and a question

I've got the worst ravelympics blah. I've done about 40 % of my projects and I would so want to give up. BLAH!

I am making four pairs of mittens. The pattern is my own and before I have loved it. But BLAH!

I've got a new phone and now I need a cozy for it. It needs to be an adult type of a cozy (I've got an adult type of job) but it needs to be kinda fun too. I should be able to watch it gazillion times a day. What would you do? Help me out here. Thanks!

I have blogged about my life for years and about my knitting projects for some months now. As the world keeps shrinking and the ravolution lets us befriend people from all over with such ease, I thought it would only be polite to do this in English, too.

So who am I? My name is Sanna and I live in Helsinki, Finland, with my boyfriend and our rattie boys. I am 27 and work as a consultant in a smallish Finnish software company.

I love wool, beer, coffee and chocolate. I enjoy the summer, beautiful colors and funky details. I hate the darkness of the long Finnish winter and cold.
